A lawn care service helps look after or improve grass, but the work included varies between providers. Some offer seasonal treatments; others also provide renovation work such as aeration, scarification or overseeding. Mowing may be included, offered separately or left to the homeowner.
Before booking, explain what you want to change and ask the provider to set out the proposed work, what it includes and what you will need to do between visits.
Starting with the lawn
A useful discussion covers how you use the area, its light and drainage, and the problems you have noticed. A worn route to a gate, a shaded corner and a lawn that stays wet may call for different approaches. Ask what the provider has observed and why it recommends a particular treatment or repair.
If you are making an enquiry, a postcode, approximate lawn size and a few photos can help explain the situation. A provider may still need more information or a visit before recommending work.
Treatments and ongoing maintenance
Some companies offer seasonal feeding or other treatments as part of a programme. Ask which visits and treatments are included, what happens if conditions are unsuitable, and whether you need to water or avoid mowing afterwards. Follow the instructions for the specific product used, including any precautions for children and pets.
Check whether mowing is part of the arrangement. If you mow yourself, ask how to fit it around visits and any newly seeded areas.
Repair and renovation
A provider might suggest overseeding where the lawn is thin but useful grass remains. Other work can include removing accumulated surface material or aerating compacted soil. A badly damaged or uneven lawn may need more extensive preparation. These are examples of work a provider may offer, not a fixed package.
Ask how the lawn may look immediately after the work, how waste is handled and what aftercare is required. Newly seeded areas need suitable moisture and protection from traffic while they establish; recovery depends on conditions. Our renovation guide explains the different levels of repair.
Questions to ask before agreeing
- Do you cover my postcode and offer the work my lawn needs?
- What is included in the proposed visit or programme, and what is separate?
- Is there a charge for an initial visit, and will the work and any charges be set out before I agree?
- What access, preparation and aftercare are needed?
- When can children, pets and regular traffic use the lawn again?
- Who handles any waste, and who should I contact with follow-up questions?
The RHS guide to hiring garden contractors suggests clarifying the work, any preliminary-visit charge and follow-up arrangements in advance. Ask about relevant qualifications and insurance where appropriate.
